Prevalence of cigarette and vaping device use by age group

The Huntington News

When Charlie Baker banned the sale of all vaping products in the fall of 2019, The Huntington News investigated what the impact of the ban was on local vape shops, especially those close to Northeastern University’s campus.

The subject matter struck me as an interesting topic for exploration given a culture of smoking and vaping present among Northeastern students. It posed and interesting spot for further exploration of a topic that was related to Baker’s ban.

We displayed the interactive graphic at the end of the article to provide readers with further information about how young adults in America interact with smoking and vaping products, the likes of which might be covered by Charlie Baker's ban.

To accompany the article, I created an interactive bar chart using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The data came from the 2018 Monitoring the Future report, produced by the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan.

With the graphic, I wanted users to be able to compare the use of vaping devices within different age groups as well as see how different forms of vaping and cigarette use compared within those same age groups. Design elements such as colors and fonts were inspired by The Huntington News website style to create a cohesive experience for a reader.
