Nowhere to go: Houselessness, a Virus and an Overwhelmed City

The Scope | with Ananya Sankar, Asher Rappaport, and Susanna Maize

When Boston Mayor Marty Walsh ordered a city-wide shutdown in mid-March due to the escalating COVID-19 pandemic, residents holed up indoors and the streets quickly emptied, except for nearly 6,000 houseless residents who suddenly faced exposure to the virus in overcrowded temporary housing.

As a member of a four-person team, I helped film, edit, and produce a documentary on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the houseless population in Boston. Over the course of a semester, we went from brainstorming topics and angles to creating a complete, polished short documentary video.

During the process, I largely focused on filming interviews and b-roll footage and helping with the editing process, however I also contributed to the interview process and some audio recording.

For the documentary we interviewed houseless Bostonians, local healthcare professionals and activists, and municipal officials to report the story.
