"I Wear a Mask For..." Poster Campaign

Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services

To better protect the individuals served by the Department of Developmental Services, we wanted to produce a poster campaign promoting proper use of masks and personal protective equipment.

With this goal in mind, I designed a series of posters using photos of DDS employees wearing PPE, and their reasons for wearing masks. To draw attention to the PPE and the individual reasons, I made the posters all black and white, except for the emphasized elements, which show up in the same color blue as the masks.

In addition to the original posters, which were distributed internally, I created a series of posts designed for the DDS social media platforms to more widely promote proper mask usage. The social media posts contained the same information in a square image format for easy posting on Instagram.

While gathering feedback on the posters, someone overseeing the project pointed out that a more colorful design might make the posters more eye-catching. After further discussion, we decided that the initial intention behind the color scheme of the posters outweighed a more brightly colored design. To supplement, I created a text-based design using the messages from DDS staff and data about why masks are effective.

I also converted this design into an animation to be used as a “story post” on the DDS Instagram and Facebook pages.

A text-based poster used all the reasons DDS staff offered for why they wear a mask, along with statistical evidence about the benefits of wearing a mask to add a more eye-popping mask in addition to the portrait-based designs.
